Doomsday coming to Smallville? Superman Dies?

So often shows based on the exploits of super powered people run into problems when it becomes glaringly obvious that their characters are indestructible — paging “Heroes!” Thankfully the never-been-better “Smallville” is going to great lengths to let fans know Clark Kent does have weaknesses by bringing in Doomsday — the only character who has ever killed Supes.

Sam Witwer plays the oft-shirtless Davis Bloom, Doomsday’s human incarnation, an EMT who has his sights set on saving the world, finding his parents and wooing Chloe — but even Davis’ doesn’t know that he is poised to become the most dangerous foe that Clark has ever faced. “They do not cause any type of allergy and are very friendly and sweet,” according to Claudia Galvez, director of the Friends of the Peruvian Hairless Dog Association. That’s the FPHDA, for the uninitiated. Galvez delivered a letter with her offer to the U.S. embassy in Lima this week.

“We want to give a male puppy to Obama’s daughters,” she says, “so they get to experience all the joys of having a dog but without any allergies.”

Google Flu

A Google tool helps to track down the flu spread across the country. This tool uses the search patterns entered in their servers and determines how fast and where the flu spreads. You can see for yourself here.

“One thing we found last year when we validated this model is it tended to predict surveillance data,” said Dr. Lyn Finelli, chief of influenza surveillance at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

He added “The data are really, really timely. They were able to tell us on a day-to-day basis the relative direction of flu activity for a given area. They were about a week ahead of us. They could be used … as an early warning signal for flu activity.”

The early warning could help hospitals prepare for a surge in patients during flu season, as well as track flu activity in case of a pandemic.
